Growing the AAA St Vincent’s Clinical Exchange Program

In 2023, St Vincent’s Hospital and the American Australian Association (AAA) established a two-way clinical exchange program between St Vincent’s and leading US healthcare and research institutes.

The new JW & M Cunningham Foundation exchange in interventional cardiology will boost the Hospital’s international reputation as a Centre of Excellence for cardiac medicine through alignment with other world leading programs. Administered by the AAA under established parameters, the fellowship will fund the exchange of two clinical fellows each year for three consecutive years.

Neuromodulation offers hope for movement disorders

St Vincent’s Neurologist Dr Joel Maamary was named as the inaugural recipient of the JW & M Cunningham Foundation Clinical Exchange in Movement Disorders.

Dr Maamary is now undertaking a six-month advanced research project at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City on Parkinson’s disease and how changes in brain activity patterns (frequency modulations) affect electrical signals in the subthalamic nucleus in the brain.

His research is part of a larger international project that aims to understand how these signals differ in people who develop Parkinson’s at a younger age due to genetic factors. By developing his ability to sense modalities, his specialised expertise will further strengthen St Vincent’s place as an international leader in neuromodulation.
